Course Objectives

The course aims to develop an in-depth knowledge of the methods and techniques of translating media and multimedia materials from English into Italian and vice versa. It provides a conceptual framework for understanding the nature of different types of media texts (e.g. TV, radio, film and new media). Course Prerequisites

At the start of the course, a knowledge of English is required at the level

C1 Advanced of the Common European Framework.

Teaching will be conducted through lectures in English. Students will be encouraged to actively participate in the discussion of topics covered in class. Practical subtitling and audiodescription activities will be organised.

Contents

This course provides basic knowledge of the methods and techniques of translating media and multimedia materials from English into Italian and vice versa. It provides a conceptual framework for understanding the nature of different media texts (e.g. print media, television, radio, films, and new media). Students will develop an understanding of the characteristics of news and learn to apply appropriate techniques to translate them, with particular reference to audio description. The differences between traditional and new media and issues of trans-editing will be discussed. Examples will include news and media materials (documentaries, films, videos on specific topics) covering a wide range of topics including politics, international relations, economics, crime, education, technology, and culture. In addition to acquiring skills in the translation and trans-editing of news, students will be introduced to the basic skills of subtitling audiovisual material, considering linguistic and technical constraints. Cultural issues in the translation of subtitles are also discussed. The course not only provides theoretical knowledge about media and multimedia translation, but also offers practical learning opportunities through in-class exercises, online discussions, and exams.
