Syllabus

Course Objectives

The main objective of the course is to enable the student to know the technologies and systems used in the clinical field to generate, store, share and extract clinical data. At the end of the course the student will know the systems used and their integrations. He/she will be able to query the clinical databases, export the data and format them according to the reference standards. He/she will also know the hospital information systems and the systems used for interoperability. Finally, he/she will be able to evaluate the functionality of the integration systems and the information exchanged by them.



Course Prerequisites

The student must have knowledge of basic engineering subjects and in particular of mathematical analysis, programming and statistics. Knowledge of physiology and pathology is also necessary.



Teaching Methods

The teaching activity consists of a part carried out through lectures, which are accompanied by exercises based on the solution of problems related to the data management of clinical data. These activities will include the processing of demonstration sets of data using open source software packages for data management.



Assessment Methods

The final assessment of learning is based on a written test that is carried out on a computer and on paper and consists of solving exercises based on what was presented during the course.

Data and databases: knowledge of clinical database structures and query systems (SQL language), data extraction and interoperability systems (views, web services, etc.)


Internet and network protocols


Knowledge and use of standard languages ​​used to manage data in the clinical field (XML, JSON, HL7, FHIR)


Elements of healthcare organization and regional reference legislation


Structure and models of hospital information systems (UML), specialized applications (RIS, PACS, LIS, AMB, ADT, Anagrafiche, Farmaco-prescrizione, Verbali operatori) and their interoperability


Coding systems for pathologies (ICD-9; ICD-10; SNOMED) and for drugs (ATC and AIC)


Organization of general and specialized medical records


Electronic Health Record and data transfer from hospital systems to the regional and/or national FSE (CDA2, IHE formats)
