Syllabus

Course Objectives

By the end of the course, students should have developed a critical and informed perspective on contemporary social issues. The study of classical themes in sociology is intended to encourage students to:

1) critically analysing social dynamics in the most significant aspects of contemporary society;

2) interpreting relational dynamics in light of social, economic and cultural transformations;

3) stimulating an individual and collective path of reflection on and knowledge of social change, with particular reference to the themes of the course.

None


Teaching Methods

Lectures with discussion of practical cases and examples of social research. The active and critical participation of students is particularly valued.


Assessment Methods

The written test consists of multiple-choice, fill-in-the-blank and open-ended questions. The assessment criteria are relevance, comprehension and argumentation. Please note that if your handwriting is illegible, your answers will not be considered when marking the test. The final mark will be calculated in thirtieths.


Contents

The course programme covers the key authors and themes in the field of sociology, from classical to modern and contemporary. In depth, the concepts of community and society, culture, belonging and difference, the global and the local, and risk will be studied, with reference to both classical theory and more recent social changes.
