Course Objectives
1) Educational goals
At the end of the course, the student has acquired a level of French
language proficiency equal to level C1+ of the Common European
Framework of Reference for LM I, equal to level C1/C2 for LM II.
The student also has an in-depth knowledge of linguistic and discursive
aspects of French, including its application to textual analysis and
translation. He/she has also developed an organic knowledge of the world
of translation for publishing, and a critical ability to evaluate existing
translations.
2) Instrumental goals (AAL)
At the end of the course, students will also have acquired, deepened and improved their instrumental competence in the four communicative skills (level C1+ for LM1, C1/C2 for LM2), as well as their translation skills for the French-Italian language pair. To this end, it is indispensable (although not formally compulsory) to attend dedicated language learning activities (AAL).

C1 level of French (Common European Framework of Reference).
Teaching Methods
1)
The course will combine theoretical lectures in French with seminar
lessons, during which the learner will carry out two types of exercise:
translation of literary texts from French into Italian and translation
criticism.
During the activities aimed at developing translation skills, the teacher
will guide the learners in the comprehension and semio-discursive
analysis of the icono-texts examined. The lecturer will also make the
students aware of their signifying complexity and explain what
translation strategies are required to achieve a pragmatically effective
translation in the context of the target language and culture. Learners
will be asked to present their translation work, individually or in small
groups, and to be able to justify their translation choices. The translation
criticism exercises too will be carried out individually or in small groups.
The learner will have to demonstrate that he/she is able to apply the
acquired theoretical and critical knowledge to the examined texts.
The teaching materials used by the lecturer will be made available on the
Moodle e-learning platform.

Assessment Methods
The examination on the main course consists of an oral test in French.
Students will be required to answer questions on the theoretical contents
studied during the course.
A written intermediate test is scheduled in December, focusing on the
contents of the first semester course. The test, which will take place in a
language laboratory, will last three hours. For students who get a
sufficient mark in this partial exam, the oral exam at the end of the
course will focus only on block two and three of the
bibliography above. In the event of failing the intermediate written test,
the oral examination will instead cover the entire bibliography.
The tests relating to the Language Learning Activities will be organised as

Students must pass the language proficiency tests (which must all be sufficient) before taking the oral
examination on the teacher's course
The final mark is the result of a weighted average of each mark
obtained in the tests relating to the content of the main course and those
resulting from the communicative competence tests relating to
the Language Learning Activities. All tests must be
sufficient. The tests relating to the AAL will have a weight of
1/3 of the final assessment, while the tests relating
to the official course (partial + oral examination) will have a weight of 2/3.
The results of the individual tests and the final mark are made available by the teacher via Moodle.
The assessment will take into account the level of acquisition of the knowledge and skills
provided by the course, particularly linguistic correctness (lexical, morphosyntactic,
pragmatic and phonological), terminological accuracy, appropriateness to the required
task and mastery of the tools of linguistic analysis and of theoretical reflection on translation.
Below is the evaluation grid that will be used:
-Excellent (30 cum laude): complete skills, applied with precision and autonomy. No errors.
- Very good (30-27): solid competences, applied correctly. Slight and non-recurring errors.
- Good (26-24): adequate competences, with some inaccuracies. Errors neither serious nor systematic.
- Sufficient (23-18): basic competence, with evident errors but sufficient understanding.
- Insufficient (<18): deficient competence, numerous errors compromising the outcome of the
examination.
Contents
1) Educational contents
The course aims to develop the learner's translation skills and his/her
capacity to criticise translated texts through an approach that combines
theoretical reflection, comparative analysis and translation practice.
The linguistic and discursive characteristics of some literary genres that
address an audience of young or very young readers will be examined.
Particular attention will be paid to two genres, the picture book and the
comic strip. The main translation problems posed by these icono-texts
will be analysed through a semio-discursive approach, and the main
translation strategies used to translate these genres will be presented.
Emphasis will be placed on the role of the translator as linguistic and
cultural mediator, but also on the pragmatic dimension of the translating
act, which must necessarily take into account the specific addressee and
the function of the translated text in the target language and culture. The
learner will also develop an awareness of the fact that translation is an
activity that is influenced by political and ideological factors, as well as by
the complex dynamics of the literary, socio-cultural and publishing
system.
Finally, a critical capacity to analyse translated texts will be developed
through the observation of existing translations. These will be examined
through two critical approaches, one of a militant type, inspired by
feminist thought, the other of a descriptive type, inspired by Berman’s
translation criticism.
