Syllabus

Course Objectives

The course provides basic concepts of theoretical and operational geodesy, reference systems and surfaces, cartography, as well as notions of modern methodologies and operational techniques of plano-altimetric surveying and satellite positioning systems. Concepts of error theory and measurement processing will be employed in the compensation of plano-altimetric topographic networks by the method of least squares. Examples and real cases of surveying activities in the field of environmental civil engineering will be presented.




Course Prerequisites

THE course is designed to introduce students to the study of modern Topography (Geomatics) in its most innovative expression (electronic measuring instrumentation, sophisticated data analysis techniques, satellite positioning techniques, analytical and digital photogrammetry, remote sensing, numerical cartography and geographic information systems). Students will easily learn the basic fundamental concepts and the most up-to-date information on the state of the art, in order to address with greater breadth of vision the complex and multidisciplinary problems pertaining to land and environmental surveying in all its forms.

The course is structured in lectures of the various theoretical topics also supported by cases, examples, numerical exercises and some demonstrations of survey activities.

Elements of Geodesy.The mathematical surface of the earth: the geoid and ellipsoid of earth's rotation.Statistical treatment of observations Fundamental concepts and theorems of measurement theory. The principle of least squares. Measurements of equal and different precision. Compensation of measurements by the method of conditional direct observations and by the method of indirect observations. Statistical tests. Topographic networks. Fundamentals of topographic surveying: reference systems and surfaces. Structure of topographic networks, polygonals, intersections, national geodetic networks. Traditional and modern topographic instruments for measuring angles, distances and elevation differences. Precision plano-altimetric networks. Detailed surveying: schemes, tools and operational methods. Leveling. Cartography. Fundamental concepts. Projections and major cartographic systems. Transformations between different reference and coordinate systems. Conformal maps. Official Italian cartography and regional technical maps. GNSS systems.
