Syllabus

Course Objectives

By the end of the course, students will have acquired and refined:
● the historical and cultural knowledge of modern French literature;
● the skills to contextualise and critically analyse the literary texts.

Course Prerequisites

None.

Teaching Methods

The course will take place through lectures and projections of audiovisual materials.
Particular attention will be paid to a teaching methodology that includes and encourages interaction and dialogue with students.

Assessment Methods

The assessment of learning takes the form of an oral examination and is graded in thirtieths.
The skills tested in the oral exam concern:
• The critical analysis of the literary texts dealt with;
• their contextualization in relation to the relevant literary and cultural panorama;
• the ability to rework the topics covered in the course in an adequate and reasoned manner, with appropriate references to critical literature.

Contents

Love and nature in the early 19th century French novel.

The course will explore the French novel of the first half of the 19th century, a period in which this narrative form emerges as a reference model in the tradition of European modernity. Through the analysis of a corpus of works of particular relevance, the various representations of love passion will be explored and the “feeling of nature” as a crucial element in the formation of the modern novelistic character will be investigated.
