Overview

Date/time interval

Primo Semestre (15/09/2025 - 20/12/2025)

Syllabus

Course Objectives

The course is finalized to give the students the technical basis and criteria for the selection and design of foundation structures depending on the specific construction site conditions, structural features and working loads.

Course Prerequisites

Students attending the course are presumed to manage knowledges on Soil Mechanics.

Teaching Methods

The course will be delivered through frontal lectures and classwork and visits to construction sites.
Students will be requested to develop a homework which will be regularly revised.

Assessment Methods

Oral exam to verify the design competence developed during the course, analysis of design issues and study cases, discussion of the assigned homework.

Contents

1. Theory of elasticity for the computation of stresses induced within a soil mass by external loadings.

2. Shallow and deep foundations: types, load transfer mechanisms, serviceability.

2.1 Bearing capacity and settlements of shallow foundations in fine and granular soils.

2.2 Bearing capacity and settlement of an isolated pile; base load and skin friction in fine and granular soils for driven and bored piles.

2.3 Groups of piles.

2.4 Identification of foundations type as a function of site conditions and structural characteristics.

2.5 Pile loading tests.

3. Slope stability, limit equilibrium method.

4. Planning of a site characterisation, lithostratigraphic and geotechnical modelling and relevant design parameters.
