Syllabus

Course Objectives

We will analyze the key features of family firms, the most diffused form of business organization. The course aims at offering a critical reflection on their prevalence and economic contribution, on their heterogeneity as well as their governance and strategic management.

Course Prerequisites

None is mandatory. A good knowledge of general management and family firms is appreciated.

Teaching Methods

The lectures will be combined with analysis and discussion of case studies and exercises concerning problems relating to family businesses. In order to better structure these activities the teachers will proceed to create teams to facilitate interaction between students and develop the ability to work in groups.
The frequency and dates of classroom activities and assignments will be established by the lecturers during the course based on the characteristics of the classroom and the timing and manner of reaction detected on the class.

Assessment Methods

Attending students: 80% In class projects, individual and team assignments 20% Exam (15 Multiple Choice Questions on the book) Non-Attending students:3 Open Questions (essay type) 15 Multiple choice questions


IMPORTANT NOTICE for 12-Credit Exam Takers:

Students enrolled in the 12-credit Digital Business and Family Business exam MUST adhere to the following sequence:


  1. Digital Business module in the first semester
  2. Family Business module in the second semester

Grades earned throughout the academic year will remain valid until September 2025 inclusive. The final grade for this course will be determined by averaging the grades received in each module. Rounding will be applied only once, to the final average grade.


No double rounding: Grades for individual modules will not be rounded. The final average will be calculated using the exact grades provided by Prof. Andreini and Prof. Bettinelli (to two decimal places).

Rounding rule: The final average grade will be rounded to the nearest whole number. If the decimal portion is less than 0.5, the grade will be rounded down. If the decimal portion is 0.5 or greater, the grade will be rounded up.
