Syllabus

Course Objectives

To introduce students with little or no previous experience of mechanical vibrations, and with quite different backgrounds, to the basic concepts of vibrational behaviour, to provide an overview of the principle and application of vibration analysis and its role in investigating the response of structural systems.

To introduce students to the concepts of identification of structural systems. The goal is to identify the characteristics (modal, mechanical properties) of the system itself, based on measurements of the structural response.


Course Prerequisites

Mathematical Analysis, Geometry and Linear Algebra, Mechanics of Materials and Structures.

Familiarity with software that requires less programming like MATLAB, Mathematica etc., is required for this course.


Teaching Methods

Front lessons, laboratories.


Assessment Methods

Homework to be presented at the oral exams, including programme elaborations (typically using MATLAB) and their applications.


Contents

The course is subdivided into the following modules.

1. Vibration analysis of structures

Single and multi-degrees of freedom oscillator; Introduction to Shock and Vibration; Vibration analysis; Vibration Transducers; Transfer function of linear systems; Measuring uncertainty.

2. Identification methods for structural systems

Introduction to structural identification; Modal analysis; Parametric and non-parametric identification methods; Basic concepts about the non linear behaviour of physical systems.

The course also includes numerical laboratories dedicated to programming calculus routines for system modelling, simulation of the system response and structural identification (developed with MATLAB).
