Syllabus

Course Objectives

The Product and Process Innovation Course aims to prepare engineers with basic operational skills to conduct key activities in support of R&D such as technical problem solving, new product design, patent analysis for knowledge retrieval/technology transfer/priority analysis, Competitors and Technologies intelligence, knowledge management and integration of activities with new Artificial Intelligence tools.
Upon completion of the course, the student will also possess basic skills to know how to present a design concept.

Course Prerequisites

Basic notions of engineering

Teaching Methods

Lecture and practice

Advanced CAI (Computer Aided Inventing) artificial intelligence tools developed specifically for this course will be used.


Assessment Methods

(individual or group) written test on a real case study provided by local company.

Contents

The course aims to provide students with a comprehensive methodology to tackle complex and unconventional problems in various fields of engineering, with a focus on product and process innovation, also integrating artificial intelligence techniques and tools.

Problem framing and analysis

Problem reformulation techniques

Methods for solving and generating innovative ideas

Application of artificial intelligence techniques in the innovation process

Integration of selected techniques into a coherent methodological pathway

Focus on practical application through exercises on real business cases

Collaboration with local companies to access concrete problems

Use of artificial intelligence tools to enhance the creative and analytical process

Consulting techniques

Classification of technical problems

Cognitive biases and their impact

Systematic problem modelling

Introduction to TRIZ theory

Project requirements management

Problem reformulation in terms of contradiction

Idea generation techniques

Integrated knowledge utilisation, with focus on patents

Use of generative AI to support problem solving and exploitation of results



At the end of the course, students will have acquired advanced skills to tackle complex challenges in different areas of engineering, not limited to the mechanical field alone
