Syllabus

Course Objectives

The course objective is to give the student the knowledge to evaluate the stress state and safety of complex mechanical components and systems. Theorethical and numerical FEM (Finite Elements models) and Finite Differences methods will be used. Complex mechanical systems will be designed and calculated by means of theoretical, numerical and FEM machine design advanced models.

Lectures, tutorials, practice in computer labs.

Contents

Numerical methods applied to engineering. Finite element method. Finite differences method. Finite elements and mesh. Isoparametric finite elements. Implicit and hints of explicit formulation. Convergence and correctness of the results from the engineering point of view. Simulation of geometrical and material non-linear problems, contact problems and simulation of the presence of cracks in mechanical components.
