Syllabus

Course Objectives

Consistent with the objectives of the course, the student must acquire the basic skills that enable him to understand and activate the processes of business management. After completing the course the student will acquire the basics of financial and actuarial mathematic.
In particular, the student will know how to capitalization and discounting money in those regimes, calculate interest rates equivalent to determine the value in t of an annuity, draw up a repayment plan and evaluate projects investment
Regarding the actuarial part, the student will know how to calcule the periodic, unique, pure and loaded life insurance premium in life and death case.

Teaching Methods

The teaching takes place through lectures with attention to direct dialogue with the students.
Interaction tools are
1) tutoring in the classroom and individual tutoring,
2) the use of e-learning

Assessment Methods

Written and oral The written exam consists of 10 closed questions. The time available for the solution of the 10 exercises is 60 minutes. For admission to the oral the student must have obtained a score of at least 18 in the written part.


Contents

1)Basics: Capitalization and present value, links among the main financial quantities, capitalization laws, interest rate and discount rate, instantaneous rate of return, instantaneous discount rate
2)Financial laws: linear capitalization, anticipated interests, continuous capitalization, mixed capitalization, comparisons among different laws. Properties of financial laws: interruptability and traslability.
3) Equivalence among rates related to different periods in different financial laws.
4) Complex financial operations: how to evalutae them. 5) Annuity: definition and classification. Valuating an annuity. Capital construction at a fixed date in the future.
6) Criteria for amortizing a debt. Different methodologies. Evaluating a loan: interests and capital.
7) Valuating an investment: discounted cash flows, internal rate of return methodologies.
8) Mathematics for insurance: biometric functions and table of mortality, Life probability and death probability. Valuating some life insurance contracts.
