Overview

Date/time interval

Secondo Semestre (17/02/2026 - 24/05/2026)

Syllabus

Course Objectives

At the end of the course, students will be able to deal, linguistically and metalinguistically, with the main aspects of English used in relation to spatiality studies and environmental studies, from the multi-perspective point of view of intercultural communication, active citizenship and critical awareness of the representation of the world. The educational goals are consistent with those of the MA Programme in which the module is located, with reference to AREA 10. These are consistent with AVA declarations for the L-LIN / 12 area, as they are focused on aspects of the English language that are relevant for the discipline in question (Competence in English at level B2 (Vantage) of the Common European Framework).

Course Prerequisites

Threshold level (B1) of the Common European Framework.

Teaching Methods

The course will be based on multimodal lectures, through the use of a variety of prompts and resources, including verbal language and multisemiotic creative resources. Special attention will be devoted to debate and students will be encouraged to suggest topics for further individual, group or collective expression and analysis.

Assessment Methods

Written examination, approx. duration 1 hour, with open and multiple choice questions on the linguistic and metalinguistic contents addressed during the year. Evaluation will take into account disciplinary knowledge and competence, the student's ability to analyae and critically read and assess languages and representations, and lexical and morphosyntactic correctness.

In particular, evaluations will fall into 5 bands:

A: Excellent (30 e lode): excellent knowledge of course contents. Presentation is accurate, correct, and appropriate.

B: Very good (30-27): very good knowledge of course contents. Presentation is correct.

C: Good (26-24): good knowledge of course contents. Presentation is mostly correct.

D: Sufficient (23-18): acceptable knowledge of course contents. Occasional mistakes are made.

E: Insufficient (less than 18): knowledge of course contents is partial and superficial; presentation is hampered by numerous mistakes.

The final grade relating to the area (Environment and Transcultural Communication + Sistemi e tecniche di partecipazione urbana) is calculated with the arithmetic average of the marks from the two modules. This grade is communicated to the student and registered through the student's electronic transcript.

Contents

On the linguistic and metalinguistic level, the course is focused on the English language that is used in relation to spatiality studies and environmental studies, from the multi-perspective point of view of intercultural communication, active citizenship and critical awareness of how the world is represented. Multimodal texts and prompts will be used, drawing on a variety of linguistic, semiotic, and creative materials from diverse languages and discourses (e.g., literature, film, architecture, philosophy, ecology).
