Syllabus

Course Objectives

To sensitize trainees to the forms of public communication that are contained in both institutional and popular communication. Acquire the ability to value all forms of informal communication that are the free expression of citizens, in relation to their inhabited spaces, shared resources, and tangible and intangible heritage.


Course Prerequisites

General knowledge of European urban settings and other geopolitical realities of the world.


Teaching Methods

Methodology of induced analysis, starting with specific cases and oriented toward finding appropriate theoretical models of reading. Learning through consideration of real cases.


Assessment Methods

The final examination consists of the discussion of an essay prepared by each student and devoted to a specific case study, chosen independently and treated on the basis of the methods of analysis covered in the course.


Contents

Concept of culture as social sharing of space and communication.

Policies to protect cultural heritage and related linguistic and cultural values.

Concept of public social space and its forms of urban communication:


places of socialization

talking statues and monuments

graffiti and written forms of communication (linguistic landscapes)

Anthropization of places, communication practices, oral traditions

Forms of human communication with ecosystems: naming and connoting mountains, seas, lakes and waterways.

The course requires assiduous attendance, as it is constructed as an interactive laboratory. Materials on the moodle platform are considered relevant to preparation for the exam. Any non-attending students must agree on a personalized study path with the lecturer.
