Overview

Date/time interval

Primo Semestre (22/09/2025 - 19/12/2025)

Syllabus

Course Objectives

1) Disciplinary objectives (official course taught by the lecturer)

At the metalinguistic level, the teaching objectives of this module (delivered in English) focus on the acquisition of a critical knowledge of the role of English in tourism communication, in the specialised contexts of the tourism industry and in the communication of sustainable tourism. They also focus on the study of English at a C1+ level of the Common European Framework. The teaching objectives are also consistent with those of the International Master's in Planning and Management of Tourism Systems, where this module takes place, which addresses the discourse of tourism in a global context.

2) Instrumental objectives (practical classes/AAL)

At the end of the course, students will also have acquired, deepened and improved their instrumental competence in the four communicative skills at C1+ CEFR level with regard to English language. To this end, it is essential (although not formally compulsory) to attend the dedicated language learning activities (AAL).

Course Prerequisites

C1+ level of English language knowledge and competence

Propaedeuticity: for students in the PMTS course of study, passing the English language for tourism examination is compulsory before taking this examination.

Teaching Methods

1) Disciplinary competences (official course taught by the lecturer)

The course will be based on flipped classes focusing on textual analysis using corpora and corpus linguistics tools; students will be encouraged to propose topics for further analysis.

2) Instrumental skills (practical classes/AAL)

See the section of the website dedicated to the University Language Centre by choosing English - LLCS: https://www.unibg.it/studiare/frequentare/apprendimento-linguistico/inglese/inglese-llcs

Assessment Methods

Learning verification

The examination includes the following:

(1) Written test (BEC) on a PC.

The pass level is 60%.

The grade for the computer-based test is valid for 18 months.

(2) written paper on a project developed during the lessons

The written examination is preparatory to the oral examination: the student cannot take the oral examination without having passed the written one.

The result of the computerised test (pass level) is valid for 18 months.

Assessment criteria

The computer-based examination counts for one third of the final grade (33.3%). The written paper counts for two thirds of the final grade (66.6%).

The assessment will take into account expressive skills, lexical, morphosyntactic, pragmatic and phonological correctness and disciplinary competence in both test (1) and test (2).

In particular, the assessment will be divided into five bands:

  •   Excellent (30 cum laude) - Knowledge and skills fully acquired and applied with precision, effectiveness and autonomy. No mistakes.
  •   Very good (30-27) - Very sound knowledge and skills, applied correctly and with confidence. Minor and non-recurring mistakes.
  •   Good (26-24) - Adequate knowledge and skills, with some uncertainty or imprecision. Presence of not serious or systematic mistakes.
  •   Sufficient (23-18) - Basic knowledge and skills acquired but applied partially or with evident mistakes. Sufficient general understanding.
  •   Insufficient (less than 18) - Insufficient knowledge and skills not adequately developed. Numerous mistakes affecting the success of the task.

Contents

1) Disciplinary content (official course taught by the lecturer)

The main features of English tourism discourse in specialised, promotional and digital contexts (supply and demand, planning and management) and in a sustainability perspective will be analysed in authentic texts. Students will also create their own texts in workshops and carry out a linguistic analysis of the corpus.

The module is delivered in English.

2) Instrumental content (practical classes/AAL)

The contents of the exercises (AAL) at C1+ CEFR level are indicated in the section of the website dedicated to the University Language Centre by choosing English - LLCS (https://www.unibg.it/studiare/frequentare/apprendimento-linguistico/inglese/inglese-llcs)
