Syllabus

Course Objectives

The course defines the economic dimension of tourism and provides economic concepts for planning and managing tourism systems. It presents and discusses: 

  • The basic macro and microeconomic concepts applied to tourism (DEFINE)
  • The tourism-related statistical definitions and concepts (ANALYZE)
  • The tourism and hospitality-related problems and solutions (APPLY)


The course, therefore, enables students to acquire specific knowledge to understand, analyse, and master tourism and hospitality-related problems from a mainly economic perspective. It also prepares individuals for careers at tourism authorities or organisations, as well as for joining the executive staff of the international travel and tourism industry.


Objectives of the modules included in Tourism and Hospitality Economics (44153-ENG) meet AVA declarations of ECON-07 sector and objectives of the degree study Planning and Management of Tourism System (international second-level degree course), particularly those concerning Economy and Industry sectors (industry, communication, demand and supply for commodities and services from a management perspective and in national/international contexts).

This course consists of 36 hours of contact time between the student and the course directors. Thus, each lesson will comprise three hours. 

A paper with tips for preparing for the written exam will be made available online. 



Assessment Methods

For both attending and non-attending students, the exam will be written and based on course texts. The test will be composed of six open-ended questions.

Students can take the exam at the end of the course, during one of the exam sessions. Results will be published online.

  • Rise of the international travel and tourism industry 
  • Economic approaches for sustainable tourism
  • Tourism policy in advanced economies 
  • Tourism as a tool of development, poverty alleviation, and lowering inequality
