Syllabus

Course Objectives

The module of “Global Tourism and Local Development” (cod. 44144-MOD2), 6 cfu, is part of the course “Tourism practices and society” (cod. 44144-ENG), 12 cfu.

The course aims to provide an overall understanding of trends, challenges, ethical issues and socio-environmental responsibilities of the tourism industry in a globalized world, its impacts on the societal and natural systems, its use of land and resources, its relationship with sustainability. Moreover, students will learn about the main research approaches within the sociology of tourism field.

After completing the course the student has acquired skills relating to concepts and methods of sociological analysis to interpret the emergence, spread and changes of tourism. The student


  • knows the various theories and techniques for the analysis of complex systems;
  • is able to grasp the structure and functioning of the tourism system, with particular reference to governance framework;
  • is able to critically analyze the concept of sustainable tourism and the concept of ‘new commons’.

The student will have acquired the ability to develop original ideas about the social and environmental context pertaining the design, planning and management of tourism systems.


Course Prerequisites

Knowledge of the basic concepts of tourism.Ability to understand texts and articulate a synthesis of the acquired concepts.


Teaching Methods

Lectures, with discussion of concrete cases application and direct dialogue with the students, who will be invited to publicly formulate proposals for further study or debates.


Assessment Methods

The examination in the module “Global tourism and local development” will consist of an individual oral exam lasting for 30 minutes. It will take place in presence of two examiners and the examinee.

The examination will consist of three parts:

• Part 1: The examinee is free to choose a topic for a 5 – 8-minute presentation related to the overall field of the module; the short presentation will be followed by a short discussion (15 min)

• Part 2: The examinee will be confronted with three different topics by the examiners and is free to choose one for the following discussion (10 min)

• Part 3: The examinee will be confronted with a few general questions on the overall topic (5 min)

Evaluation criteria

• Content: Ability to understand theories and issues, some of which are at the current boundaries of an academic discipline

• Critical Analysis: Ability to critically evaluate ideas, challenge assumptions and devise and sustain arguments

• Synthesis/Reflections: Ability to synthesize the topics presented in the two course modules

• Formal Presentation: Ability to present, structure and communicate a topic/issue


Contents

The first part of this module focuses on the outline of sociology of tourism, the concepts of sustainability and sustainable tourism, the structure and functioning of the tourism system, the relations between tourists and locals.

The second part of the module aims to offer theoretical and empirical insights into the theory of complex systems, the different logics of governance of such systems, the topic of the 'new' commons and a look into social research methodology applied to the tourism sector.
