Syllabus

Course Objectives

At the end of the course, students will be able to:

understand a complex social field through qualitative methods, i.e. read and develop a short ethnographic field;

analyze and interpret the visual digital languages used to describe complex social fields;

navigate critically through visual narrations related to tourism experiences.


Course Prerequisites

General background knowledge of social sciences theory.


Teaching Methods

Lesson with support of visuals and slides. Digital tools wil be used to develop interactivity.


Assessment Methods

Oral exam on the contents of the course.

For attending students: il will be possibile to develop an in-class execise on visual digital languages

that might replace partially or totally the oral exam.


Contents

The course is organized in two sections.


Section 1 deals with qualitative methodology of social reserach.

Drawing upon historic examples and exemplary case studies, ethnographic

and open interview methodologies are presented and explained in depth.


Section 2 deals with the interplay between visual anthropology and tourism,

with a focus on the producion of digital visual contents in multiple tourism

contexts (Norway, India, Italy). The course discusses the relation between formal

and informally produced digital visual narratives.
