Overview

Date/time interval

Secondo Semestre (16/02/2026 - 29/05/2026)

Syllabus

Course Objectives

At the end of the course, you will acquire historical-critical skills in the field of western music with particular reference to melodrama and its literary, musical and scenic specificities, as well as a specific competence.

Course Prerequisites

No specific requirements are needed.

Teaching Methods

Lectures with audio and visual materials.

Assessment Methods

The examination consists of an oral interview aimed at assessing the knowledge and critical and methodological skills acquired by the students, who will be invited to confront the topics and methodological issues addressed during the course and in the reference texts. They will also be invited to historically frame and describe in their fundamental characters the musical works relevant to the course topics, of which they will have listened carefully and repeatedly.

The assessment is expressed in thirtieths and will take into account the degree of thoroughness of the reference bibliography and the ability to make connections between the topics addressed in the course. Maximum marks correspond to the achievement of an organic vision of the topics, combined with the ability to analysis and conceptually synthesis and the ability to express oneself in language appropriate to the matter. Acquisition of the course subject below the minimum threshold, combined with inadequate expression, results in an insufficient mark.

Contents

European music of the 19th and 20th centuries with specific reference to the dynamics of musical genres and styles in melodrama, highlighted through the listening to and analysis of emblematic works. The course specifically explores the dominator/victim dialectic in the melodrama of Giuseppe Verdi and Giacomo Puccini.
