Syllabus

Course Objectives

After completing the course, students will have consolidated their foundational critical skills: they will have acquired theoretical and methodological skills for analyzing and interpret Spanish poems of the second half of the XIX century and of the XX century, as well as knowledge of the historical and artistic period, with particular reference to the relationship between texts and cultural context.

Course Prerequisites

Students should have B1-level knowledge of the Spanish language in order to understand the lectures and the analyzed texts. The Spanish Language I exam is required for LLSM students.

Teaching Methods

Teaching will take place through lectures in Spanish, sometimes using ppt or pdf files. Active student participation is required, particularly in activities that concern textual analysis.

Throughout the course, professors from other Spanish or Italian universities may be invited to deliver specialized lectures.

Assessment Methods

The exam consists of an oral test with approximately six (except in special cases) open-ended questions. It can be conducted in either Spanish or in Italian (the student can choose), and will assess the entire program's content.

The score (./30) will depend on:

- Knowledge of the historical, cultural and literary context, as well as on the studied authors;

- Interpretation skills in reading Spanish poems;

- Critical use of theoretical texts to support textual analysis;

- Communicative skills in Italian or Spanish (coherence, cohesion, clarity, accuracy, propriety an effective style).

Grading scale:

-Outstanding (30 e lode): excellent knowledge of all of the contents of the course and excellent skills in analyzing and contextualizing the texts. The student uses the appropriate terminology.

- Very good (30 to 28): very good knowledge of the contents and very good skills in analyzing and contextualizing the texts.

- Good (27-25): good knowledge of the contents and good skills in analyzing the texts.

- Fair (24-22): fair knowledge of the contents, even if not always complete, and some skills in analyzing the texts have been acquired.

- Sufficient (21-18): sufficient knowledge of the contents, but not complete. The skills in analyzing the texts are not wholly satisfactory, but they are sufficient.

- Fail (below 18): the knowledge of the contents is partial and confused. The texts are analyzed in a superficial and incoherent way.

Attending students will have the opportunity to submit written assignments prepared during the lessons which, if done very well, may fully or partially replace the oral exam. Instruction will be provided only during the lectures.
