Syllabus

Course Objectives

Acquiring theoretical knowledge and operational skills in methods of linguistic analysis at different domains and for different purposes. Particular attention is paid to non-European languages with respect to Average Standard European languages in an acquisitional perspective. This understanding and the ability to analyse the acquisition product will foster the understanding of the students' own second language acquisition process.


Course Prerequisites

Knowledge of basic notions of linguistics (for instance, notions such as phoneme, morpheme, lexeme) and of principles regarding the syntactic, semantic and pragmatic organization of language.


Teaching Methods

Lectures and classroom activities of analysis of second language data; classroom discussion on second language productions and processes and on factors that impact on second language acquisition.
Lectures are accompanied by hand-outs prepared by the teacher. The content of the hand-outs relates to the content of the textbook. Students are asked to download the hand-outs from the platform used. The password, which is delivered during the first class, will give access to the course in the platform. The course is taught in Italian.

Assessment Methods

The exam is oral. Oral examination: both the knowledge of theoretical notions and the ability to apply them to second language data will be assessed. Four open-ended or close-ended questions on theoretical notions and analysis of second language data. Eight points will be assigned to each accurate and complete answer. A total score of 32 points is equal to 30/30 cum laude.

Different categories of speakers. Factors and processes governing the acquisition of a second language. Perception, comprehension and analysis of input. Development of learner varieties. The influence of the first language. The age factor in the acquisition of a second language. Theories on second language acquisition.

The material for exam preparation is as follows:

A) ATTENDING STUDENTS: Hand-outs and notes of lectures. The content of the hand-outs relates to the content of the texbook.

B) NON-ATTENDING STUDENTS: Text 1 (chapters 1-5; 211 pages).
