Syllabus

Course Objectives

The course provides the tools to read the social realities of the Middle East and the Arabic-speaking areas of contemporary Asia from a comparative and global perspective.

At the end of the course students are able to:

- Navigate through the main historical processes, cultural and social transformations of the areas of the Middle East and Arabic-speaking Asia;

- Read the interdependencies between the regions of the world from a systemic perspective, in particular those between Asia and the West;

- Critically analyze anthropological texts on socio-cultural themes specific to the Arabic regions


Course Prerequisites

Knowledge of global history and geography.


Teaching Methods

Frontal lessons with video and slide support.


Guided discussions on the topics of the course.


Assessment Methods

Written assignment on exam texts.

For attending students: intermediate exercises related to the topics covered in class will be proposed.

Positive evaluation of all the exercises can partially or completely replace the final written exam.


Contents

The course introduces to specificanthropological themes such as :

the study of social transformations and globalization in Middle East contemporary societies;

the family and inter-gender cultural dynamics, in relation and debate with the West;

in-depth case studies on local communities and inter-Asian relations, analyzed through

classic anthropological readings.
