Syllabus

Course Objectives

This course focuses on project management as a mechanism for managing current activities and research projects.

Upon completion of the course, the students will have learned basic knowledge of organising and planning a project and managing the processes associated with it. In particular, they will gain knowledge about the dynamics and critical issues in project management, planning tools (scope statement, WBS, OBS, Gantt Diagram), stakeholder and risk management tools.

None.


Teaching Methods

The course will be delivered in a hybrid mode, in-person and online Teams connection.


Teaching is divided into 5 sections:

  • Project management
  • The project life cyle
  • The management of the project scope
  • The project stakeholder management
  • The risk project management

Assessment Methods

For all students (attending and nonattending), assessment of learning is through a project work aimed at analyzing a real project chosen by the students using the methodologies seen in class. Students are expected to deliver the following deliverables: a presentation in MS Power Point, a scope statement (based on a template provided), risk and stakeholder analysis. Students will have 20 minutes to present their project in the exam.


Contents

  • Project management: Types of projects. Contract projects and new product and service development projects. Repetitive projects and processes. Project organization. Organizational forms and the role of the project manager. The management of project teams.
  • Project life cyle: The concept of project life cycle. Project management phases and processes. Initiating, Planning, Controlling & Executing, Closing.
  • Project scope management: Scope management, The Work Breakdown Structure, planning methodologies.
  • Project stakeholder management: Stakeholder identification, The salience model, Stakeholder management methods
  • Project risk management: The risk management process, Qualitative risk assessment.

At the beginning of the course the schedule of lectures will be provided through the elearning platform, with explicit indication of which parts of the textbooks to adopt for the preparation of individual lectures.
