Syllabus

Course Objectives

The course provides knowledge about pathologies in the field of neuropsychology. The main aims are: 1) to study the deficit of cognitive functions in patients affected by lesions or dysfunctions of the central nervous system; 2) to provide tools that allow the clinical diagnosis of cognitive deficits with the aim of providing prognosis and rehabilitative treatments.

Course Prerequisites

Students should have knowledge of neuroanatomy and neurobiology that can be acquired through the courses of Bases of Psychobiology and Cognitive Neurosciences.

Teaching Methods

Teaching will be conducted through lectures and laboratories in groups. During the laboratories the teaching will be of interactive type, with the help of video / web resources, practical training and discussion of clinical cases for attending students. Non-attending students must adhere to published online program. Examples of clinical cases will be available on the teacher web-site. For any queries can contact the teacher personally or by e-mail.


Assessment Methods

The exam consists of the evaluation of acquired knowledge by means of a written exam with two open-ended questions and the discussion of a clinical case. Each open question will be evaluated with a score 0→3 while the score for the discussion of the clinical case will consider the properties of language and critical skills in the formulation of a diagnostic hypothesis (maximum score 24). To get the minimum score (sufficient score) it will necessary to overcome the part concerning the clinical case.


Contents

Neuropsychological methodology, neurophysiological techniques, neuroimaging. The main neurological and psychiatric pathologies underlying clinical neuropsychological deficits. Clinical studies of cognitive functions (language, attention, memory, perception, spatial awareness, motory, frontal syndrome, dementia). The neuropsychological examination. Rehabilitative treatments of some neuropsychological disorders.

Italian and English articles will be suggested in order to investigate some issues.

The students not attending classes and the working students must adhere to the program described above. For any request, they can contact the teacher either personally or by e-mail.
