Overview

Date/time interval

Primo Semestre (23/09/2025 - 20/12/2025)

Syllabus

Course Objectives

Introduction to philological study of medieval Romance literatures, illustrated using examples from texts and textual transmission.

Skills: geochronological mapping of the authors and works, close reading of the texts, methods of textual scholarship will be acquired, being essential in the knowledge, reconstruction and appreciation of medieval Romance literatures.

Key learning outcomes: medieval literary works will be analysed as living objects, in transformation, and as part of century-long (and often multilingual and transmedial) processes involving a complex web of social and cultural relations.

Course Prerequisites

Core secondary school-level grounding in Western literary culture, including reading and analysis skills.

Teaching Methods

Lectures are in-person and incorporate multimedia tools. After a general introduction, the course will methodically consider all the main aspects of medieval Romance litteratures, as well as of the authors and the texts.

Assessment Methods

Evaluation (1-30/30) will be twofold: a multiple choice text (about 1h), followed by an oral exam (about 20 min.). The multiple choice test will be based on the course textbook and will consist of thirty questions. Correct answers receive one point, no points are counted for missing responses and random guessing. Eighteen points or above equals a passing mark. If the test is passed, the result stays valid for two consecutive exam sessions (appelli). Successfully passing the multiple choice test is a prerequisite for admittance to the oral exam. The oral exam consists of one or more questions drawn from the lecture and textbooks, reading aloud from a text, sight translation, and explicating one or more of the excerpts analysed during the course.

Contents

The course will focus on two complementary aspects of medieval Romance Literatures. On the one hand, authors and authorship, and history, geography and contexts of literary production. On the other hand, the different forms of textual transmission and the edition strategies and techniques employed for publishing Romance literary texts according to scientific standards. The course will give an overview of medieval Romance literatures by means of concrete examples, with the examination of digitised manuscripts and early printings.
