Syllabus

Course Objectives

By the end of the course, students will have become familiar with the problems, methods, and topics of the philosophy of various mental phenomena; they will have developed the ability to engage in philosophical reflection on issues related to the domain of the mind and the human person; and they will have improved their ability to communicate philosophical content, both in written and oral form.

The expected learning outcomes include:


  • knowledge of the main approaches in the philosophy of mind
  • the ability to critically read a philosophical text
  • the ability to evaluate and construct arguments concerning the domain of the mind and the human person



Course Prerequisites

Some level of familiarity with analytic style philosophy.


Teaching Methods

Lectures alternating with the reading and discussion of short essays.


Assessment Methods

Oral examination (interview)


The interview aims to assess:

a) the ability to produce and recognize characteristic forms of argumentation, with particular emphasis on thought experiments;

b) the ability to understand a philosophical text, assessed through the analysis of a short excerpt;

c) knowledge of the main metaphysical theories of mental phenomena.


The interview will consist of between 3 and 5 questions, depending on the quality of the answers, which will be evaluated based on:

  1. accuracy (no errors),
  2. relevance,
  3. clarity (the ability to be concise yet thorough),
  4. expressive effectiveness.


The result will be communicated at the end of the interview.

The final grade is expressed on a scale of thirty.

The mind-body problem from Descartes to the modern days. The metaphysics of the mind based on thought-experiments.
