Syllabus

Course Objectives

The module addresses the topic of human resources management (HRM) from the perspective of social and environmental sustainability of an organization. Thanks to this module, students will be able to understand and analyze:

  1. the link between HRM and sustainability in organizations;
  2. the main theoretical models and approaches to human resources management, and their positioning with regard to sustainability issues;
  3. the HRM value chain from a sustainability perspective.

Students will also be able to critically evaluate HRM processes and practices of real cases, in terms of their social and environmental sustainability, and design appropriate organizational interventions, anticipating any critical issues.


Course Prerequisites

  • General knowledge of the historical, social and cultural context, in Italy and Europe;
  • Awareness of the main social and economic dynamics characterizing the current world of work;
  • Advanced knowledge of Italian;
  • Knowledge of English, in particular good understanding of written texts and literature.

Teaching Methods

  • Frontal lessons
  • Study and critical debate of cases/interventions
  • Group work and presentations, flipped classroom
  • Study and in-depth analysis of scientific literature and cases, both individually and in groups.

Assessment Methods

The assessment methods focus on both content knowledge and analysis skills. Two alternative assessment methods are proposed:

  • For attending students: ongoing activities, consisting of both individual and group work. The specific methods and contents of the individual activities, as well as the evaluation criteria, are presented by the teachers at the beginning of the module.
  • For non-attending students: written exam, two questions on the topics covered in the texts in the bibliography, maximum duration 40 minutes. The answers are evaluated according to the following criteria: relevance; exhaustiveness; appropriate links to literature, materials and cases; synthesis (no redundancies and repetitions); propriety of language; clarity of exposition.

The module is structured around the following topics:

  • Strategic human resources management models, with particular reference to social and environmental sustainability;
  • Staff selection and development from a sustainability perspective;
  • Training as a tool for well-being and personal growth;
  • Performance evaluation and rewards from a sustainability perspective;
  • Employee participation and voice tools;
  • Diversity and inclusion at work;
  • New forms of work, flexible, hybrid and smart;
  • Organizational change and design of sustainable interventions.
