Overview

Date/time interval

Secondo Semestre (16/02/2026 - 29/05/2026)

Syllabus

Course Objectives

The course will allow students to acquire a solid understanding of the origins of globalization, dating back to the nineteenth century, and the main characteristics of the global economy. It will also enable critical discussion of key topics: globalization, the relationship between globalization and democracy, and that between globalization and inequality. Special attention will be given to Europe and its role in governing globalization.

Course Prerequisites

Proficiency in the English language adequate for reading and understanding short texts in English provided by the professor during the lectures. Additionally, a good grasp of basic concepts in geography and contemporary history is required.

Teaching Methods

The course is based on lectures as well as in-class discussions on assigned readings.

Before the start of the course, a list

of required readings will be made available, drawn from the books indicated in

the syllabus, which will serve as reference material for group presentations.

This will also help students understand the material discussed and presented in

the lectures.

Therefore, students will be asked to

work in groups to prepare a presentation on an assigned topic. Students must

study the suggested textbooks in the sections indicated by the instructor.

The slides presented in class will be

made available.

Assessment Methods

Written and oral exam. Students will be evaluated based on their ability to present and critically discuss the topics covered in class.

Contents

The course introduces students to the evolution of the global economy since the mid-19th century and aims to respond to the challenges posed by global history, highlighting, throughout the economic events of contemporary history, the interconnections and dynamics of this remarkable expansion. It identifies the factors that have led to processes reinforcing inequalities in development opportunities faced by the contemporary world.

The course is organized chronologically and covers three main periods:

  1. The first liberal era until 1914;
  2. The interwar period and the disintegration of the global economy (1914-1939);
  3. The period following World War II and the integration of the global economy.

For each period, the course examines the key features of trade and trade policy, the payment system and monetary regime, and movements of capital and people.

Additionally, the course discusses its impact on democracy, the nation-state, international institutions, inequalities, and global convergence.

Main topics:

  • Introduction to the course and definition of globalization.
  • Europe and the global economy in the 19th century: the first divergence.
  • The first globalization (1870-1914): migration, capital, and trade.
  • The end of the global liberal economy and the Great Depression (1914-1939).
  • The Bretton Woods system and European reconstruction (1944-1973).
  • The end of Bretton Woods and the second globalization (1973-2020).
  • International organizations and the global economy."
