Syllabus

Course Objectives

The course will introduce students to the study of the public sphere and the processes through which digital media shape the emergence of publics and the circulation and sharing of public discourses, that is, those representations and descriptions of reality that express a collective sentiment and are relevant to politics and democracy. The course will provide interpretive and critical tools for understanding 1) what public discourse is, what characterizes it, and what makes it relevant to democracy; and 2) how public discourses take shape on social media and are shaped by the communication cultures that develop there. By the end of the course, students will have acquired the basic conceptual tools necessary for understanding the processes of the digital public sphere.

Course Prerequisites

None

Teaching Methods

The course includes a combination of lectures and practical, application-oriented activities to facilitate learning—in particular, group work involving the presentation and discussion of essays (flipped classroom, peer education).

Assessment Methods

The exam is written, lasts one hour (60 minutes), and consists of two open-ended questions that require a thorough study of the texts listed in the bibliography. For students who participated in the course activities, one question will focus on the essays analyzed and discussed in class.
The evaluation will take the following criteria into account:
- relevance of the answers;
- ability to argue a point;
- use of correct terminology;
- well-reasoned and coherent structure of the argument.
Each answer is assigned a score out of 30; to pass, students must score at least 18/30 on all questions. The overall grade is calculated as the average of the scores obtained on the two answers.

For students whose study plan includes the exam THEORIES OF COMMUNICATION AND DIGITAL MEDIA (code 92169, 12 CFU), the module SOCIOLOGY OF DIGITAL MEDIA [92169-MOD2] is paired with the module THEORIES OF COMMUNICATION AND MEDIA [92169-MOD1]. The two-hour exam covering both modules must be taken on the same day, and the final grade will be calculated as the average of the grades obtained in each individual module. The results will be published in the student’s portfolio. To pass the 12 CFU exam, students must achieve a passing grade in both modules.

The instructor reserves the right to request a supplementary oral exam, even after the written exam has been administered, if deemed necessary to verify that students have effectively acquired the knowledge and skills outlined in the course’s learning objectives and to ensure that grades are assigned correctly.

Contents

The course is divided into two parts. The first part will be devoted to presenting and analyzing the main theories and concepts used to describe the public sphere, as well as to exploring the analytical and conceptual tools useful for analyzing the formation of publics and public discourses. In the second part, we will examine empirical research conducted in the field of the sociology of communication and media that highlights specific types of public discourse emerging on social media platforms.
