Syllabus

Course Objectives

The aim of the course, starting from the pedagogical and methodological reflection declined in the knowledge of methods, teaching and tools, is to enable students to acquire skills, terminology, critical skills and, in perspective, competences to operate in the complexity and porosity of physical activity, socio-educational and sports contexts taking into account the characteristics and needs of individuals in different ages of their life and motor skills.

Once the course is completed the student will have acquired:

• Knowledge and understanding related to the issues of corporeality with particular reference to the body in motion, the sustainability of teaching in relation to the promotion of well-being, the theme of physical literacy health and active lifestyles in the various ages of life.

• Knowledge of motor, cognitive, psychological and affective characteristics typical of the different stages of growth, adulthood and aging.

• Knowledge of specific terminology related to physical activity teaching and different pedagogical approaches.

• Ability to use the skills acquired in the course to design, supervise and conduct motor activities aimed at groups of people with different characteristics and objectives.

Teaching Methods

In the first part, the teaching activity is proposed through lectures including requests specifically formulated to enhance thoughtful processes, and group works.

In the second part, examples will be the objects of discussions and group assignments aimed at facilitating students’ reflection and teacher’s feedback. A workshop phase will also be developed through the discussion of cases proposed by the teacher and presented through narrative descriptions, readings, and videos.


Assessment Methods

The final exam is based on an oral test concerning the entire content of the course. For students attending classes, intermediate or final tests will be organized aiming to assess: a) the achieved knowledge and abilities (assessed using written tests including open ended questions and conceptual maps); b) the achieved competences (assessed through the presentation and discussion of case-studies).

  • The results of the intermediate tests represent a significant part of the final evaluation that includes an oral test as a final exam.



Contents

The course is divided into two parts. The first aims to make students aware of the statistics related to physical activity and sports practice, the pedagogical and methodological references, the diverse representations of coporeal, physical and sports education, the differences between educational settings. This part will also cover the themes of play, the rights of children and adolescents in sport, the places and contexts of physical activity. The reference background is the sustainability of motor teaching. 

The second aims to address teaching methods and terminology while discussing examples concerning various ages of life and the theme of the different practices necessary for the maintenance of health and well-being in adulthood and ageing. Particular attention will be paid to the motor, cognitive, psychological and affective characteristics typical of the different stages of growth, adulthood and aging. An analysis of case studies will also be carried out in this part with the aim of involving students in designing motor activities with different purposes and for different groups. The reference background is the promotion of physical literacy (physical literacy).

For the student workers not attending the course, a Distance Learning (FAD) system will be activated. The procedure to take part in the FAD system will be presented in the first lesson of the course or upon contact with the teacher. For Erasmus students it is possible to arrange the exam program with the course leader.
