Syllabus

Course Objectives

Acquiring basic notions concerning the microscopic structure of materials, in relation to their physical and chemical properties. Acquiring basic notions of thermodynamics, applied to the study of simple physical and chemical systems. In particular, the student knows how to perform calculations for the solution of chemical problems and for the interpretation of chemical phenomena. The course contributes to the educational objectives of the course of study, in particular as regards the area of basic disciplines.

Course Prerequisites

Dimensional analysis: unit conversion. Structure of the periodic table. Knowledge of basical chemical nomenclature. States of matter and state transitions. Meaning of chemical formulas.


Teaching Methods

Lectures (32 h), applied activities (16 h).


Assessment Methods

The exam is done through a written test of 90 minutes and an oral examination that takes place in the following days. Both tests are mandatory. The written test consists of ten questions/exercises, of both theoretical and calculation, about the entire program and its passing is a condition for admission to the oral test. To pass the written test 6 questions out of 10 must be completed correctly. During the written examination it is required to have at hand a periodic table including thermodynamic and electrochemical data and a calculator: no other materials can be used during the test.

Atomic structure; periodic table and periodic properties. Chemical bonding: covalent bonding, ionic bonding, metallic bonding. Intermolecular forces. The concept of mole. Simple stoichiometric calculations. Limiting reagent. Gas mixtures and partial pressures. Energy and chemical reactions. Calorimetry. Principles of thermodynamics. Enthalpy, entropy, free energy. Hess’s law. Phase diagrams for a component. Solutions. Concentration units. Chemical equilibrium. Le Chatelier's principle. Equilibrium constant. The law of mass action. Acid-base equilibria. PH calculation. Titrations. Redox reactions. Electrochemistry. Batteries. Faraday's laws. Electrolyisis. Kinetics: reaction rate and catalysis.

More information

The written test may be replaced by two partial tests, one midterm and one at the end. Sufficiency in both tests allows direct access to the oral test.
