Overview

Date/time interval

Secondo Semestre (23/02/2026 - 06/06/2026)

Syllabus

Course Objectives

Provide the students with the basics of engineering drawing, which will enable them to work more effectively in the various fields of engineering both according to the usual practices of the technical drawing or using computer-aided tools currently available, particularly 3D CAD systems. The students will be given an exposure to use 3D CAD software for exercising their skills and knowledge to complete 2D drawings and 3D models.

Course Prerequisites

None

Teaching Methods

- Lectures sessions
- Lab sessions that include: freehand drawing exercises and the use of 3D solid modeling to create 3D models and drafting of parts and assemblies.
- Video that show the use of the 3D CAD system.

The slides of lectures and lab exercises are available on the course web-site.

Assessment Methods

Exam at the end of the course.
The exam consists of three mandatory parts to be taken in the same day:
1. A freehand drawing test, which consists in drawing views and/or sections of a mechanical part (50% of the final grade). It lasts three hours.
2. A test on the topics presented during the lectures, such as dimensioning, dimensional, geometric and surface tolerances, and threaded fastener (20% of the final grade). The test comprehends 7 questions and lasts 30 minutes.
3. A test which consists in realizing the 3D model and the 2D drawing of a mechanical part using a 3D CAD system (30% of the final grade). It lasts one hour

To pass the exam, it is necessary to obtain a positive evaluation in all three tests. The score of each test and the final one are published on the course website.

Contents

LECTURES SESSIONS
The course includes the following topics:
- Introduction to the design process
- Types of technical drawings
- Standards
- Orthographic projections, views and sections
- Dimensioning and technological processes
- Dimensional, geometric and surface tolerances
- Threaded fastener
- Materials and related designation
-Morphology of machine elements
- Reading of simple assembly drawings: layout, BOM, views, sections and dimensioning

LAB SESSIONS
Lab exercises are programmed to guide the student in the acquisition of an adequate level of manual dexterity as well as technical knowledge of mechanical drawing. The exercises cover, in a progressive way, the different topics presented during the lessons. A part of the exercises is performed using 3D CAD systems to produce 3D models and 2D drawings of mechanical parts.
