Overview

Date/time interval

Secondo Semestre (17/02/2026 - 31/05/2026)

Syllabus

Course Objectives

The course provides advanced theoretical and methodological tools for interpreting the role played by digital connection in contemporary communication and media processes. This knowledge is achieved through lectures attendance and in-depth study of the texts discussed in the classroom and contained in the bibliography. The ability to apply knowledge and understanding is nurtured through classroom group work and exercises aimed, among other things, at enhancing students' communication abilities

Course Prerequisites

None. All the concepts and theories needed to understand the topics will be introduced during the course. A familiarity with media studies and a critical understanding of digital society are desirable.

Teaching Methods

The course combines lectures and practical collaborative activities based on the analysis of case studies and/or scientific articles, both in class and independently.

Assessment Methods

Assessment is based on a written exam aimed at verifying the knowledge of theoretical and methodological concepts, as well as the ability to express such knowledge autonomously and critically, using appropriate disciplinary language.

The exam consists of open-ended questions. Each answer is graded on a 30-point scale; to pass the exam, all answers must achieve at least 18/30. The final grade corresponds to the average of the scores obtained.

The exam must be taken in the same session as the module 93196-MOD1 – Media Studies e Comunicazione Digitale B. To pass, students must achieve a passing grade in both modules; the final grade is the weighted average of the two results.

Contents

The course begins with an introduction focused on theories and concepts for the socio-technical analysis of digital media, with particular attention to the social and political dimensions of technological infrastructures and to the processes through which technologies are disseminated, appropriated (“domesticated”) and shaped by users and other social actors.

In the second part, the course explores the role of digital platforms and datafication and data governance processes as key elements of contemporary communication. Through sociological and critical perspectives, three complementary dimensions are addressed:

- Socio-technical analysis of platforms and “big data”, considering their technical, economic, social, political and discursive aspects;

- User practices, understood both as forms of agency, participation and everyday engagement with data and platforms, and as skills and inequalities;

- The governance challenges of data and platforms: analysing the role of public, private and civil society actors in promoting a more equitable and responsible digital ecosystem.
