Contents

The course begins with an introduction to AI as a socio-technical phenomenon, exploring its most relevant aspects from a sociological perspective. This is followed by an overview of the key theories concerning AI and its integration into communication processes, with the aim of focusing on the relational and cultural aspects involved in the interaction with a non-human interlocutor. Through the analysis of case studies, the course will delve into the following topics:

  • Definitional aspects: AI as a communicative agent, capable of dialoguing adaptively and continuously with human beings, leads to a redefinition of communication theories and norms developed around anthropocentric assumptions.
  • Functional aspects and key elements of the communication process: How certain technologies are designed to perform a communicative role and how people perceive them in that role.
  • Relational aspects of GenAI: How AI technologies are appropriated by social actors and become resources for the construction of their social worlds.
