Syllabus

Course Objectives

At the end of the module, the student have complete knowledge of the theories and the practices of contemporary visual media experience and are able to recognizes the characteristics of immersive media and critically describe their aesthetic, cultural and social relevance.


Course Prerequisites

Basic knowledge of audiovisual languages.


Teaching Methods

The module includes the use, analysis, and collective discussion of a series of immersive experiences through virtual, augmented, and mixed reality headsets made available at the Visual Media Lab.


The instructor provides didactic materials and support through the university e-learning platforms.


Assessment Methods

For attending students, assessment is based on the evaluation of a report on an immersive experience and a final oral examination.


Fot non-attending students, the evaluation test consists of an oral exam. The students must demonstrate complete knowledge of the mandatory bibliography. Non-attending students are required to view the 360° videos indicated by the instructor in the e-learning platform using a virtual reality cardboard.


The final grade is expressed out of 30.


For the students taking the Visual culture exam (including the module Theories of cinema and photography), the final grade consists of the weighted average of the grades of the two modules.


Contents

The module deals with the forms of immersive media experience (virtual reality, augmented reality, and mixed reality), with particular emphasis on the aesthetic aspects and mediatized sensitization to critical subjects (such as climate change, refugees and migrations, social inclusion).


1) Genesis and development of immersive technologies

2) Multimedia linguistic features of immersive media

3) Multimodal aesthetic aspects and psychological implications of immersive media experience

4) Genres and applications of immersive media in the fields of entertainment and newsmaking

More information

The instructor communicates with students through the university e-learning platform. Students are required to consult the e-learning space of the module on a weekly basis to access materials provided by the instructor. Non-attending students supplement the exam program with additional readings.


The exam program is the same both for attending and non-attending students.


Erasmus and PDP or PEI students are invited to get in contact with the instructor at the beginning of the course.
