Syllabus

Course Objectives

Advanced course in Italian literature aimed at in-depth knowledge and critical reflection on main issues and texts related to the Renaissance and Early modern period.
The course aims to provide knowledge and methods for future professional life, which combine an adequate start-up to research, in view of the master's thesis and possible post-graduate studies, and an adequate awareness of the role of teaching Italian literature in middle and higher education. Attention will be devoted on one hand to the study of ancient books in their materiality, with direct observation of Sixteenth and Seventeenth century books, on the other hand to new technologies and Digital Humanities.
In particular, students will be called upon to reflect on the structure, style and history of the composition of the texts, to interpret them recognizing their cultural value, to analyze the issues related to the great periods of literature and the arts, and above all to recognize the blurred boundaries between discipline and discipline, placing himself in an open and interdisciplinary attitude that understands the multifaceted nature of the scholars of the modern age and their relevance. They will also acquire specific knowledge and interpretative skills on the poetry of occasion and commendation, on the concept of the Baroque, on Giovan Battista Marino, and on European history, politics and art between the 16th and 17th centuries.

Course Prerequisites

Basic knowledge of Italian literary history from the Origins to the 19th century.

Teaching Methods

Lectures and seminars with collaboration of the students and of renowned scholars.


Assessment Methods

Written test to verify: 1) knowledge of course contents; 2)contextualization and interpretation skills; 3) writing and discussing skills on course contents; 3) writing and discussing skills on theoretical and methodological points.
The exam is structured as follows:
4 open questions of the following kind:
1) identification, literal comprehension and commentary of a text;
2) commentary to critical views of scholars;
3) general question on a problem, a work, one or more characters;
4) summary of essays or part of essays in programme;
5) comparison of texts or passagese.
Duration: 4 hours.
Evaluation out of 30 points, according to the following grid: 16 points, 4 for each question. The points are counted starting from 14/30, therefore 18/30 will be attained with 4 points.
Detail of evaluation, for each questione:
0 points: no answer, answer off topic, erroneous contents, no identification of proposed text;
1 point: basic knowledge, writing with syntactic, lexical or ortographic difficulties;
2 points: average or partial knowledge, weak analytical approach, average correct writing;
3 points: good knowledge of contents, analytical approach, correct writing;
4 points: very good knowledge of contents, analytical and critical approach, precision in details, correct and elegant writing, with knowledge of technical language;
4+ points (full marks and honour): excellent knowledge of contents, excellent critical approach, knowledge of details, reference to personal or optional readings, correct and elegant writing, with knowledge of technical language.

Contents

Literature, Art and Politics in Seventeenth-Century Italy: Giovan Battista Marino's 'Ritratto' and 'Tempio'. The course will deal with encomiastic literature in the modern age through the analysis of Marino's panegyrics. Not only the structure and style will be outlined, but also the links with the courts of Savoy and France, and with the artistic-figurative and political imagery with which power presented itself to the public in Seventeenth-Century Italy and Europe. Founded on a solid view of the philological-textual aspects, the course has a marked interdisciplinary character according to the most up-to-date studies on Seventeenth-Century encomiastic.
