Overview

Date/time interval

Secondo Semestre (16/02/2026 - 29/05/2026)

Syllabus

Course Objectives

At the end of the course students know the fundamentals of the theories of visual culture; approach the aesthetic aspects of the contemporary audiovisual experience critically; independently analyze the cultural and social characteristics of post-cinematographic and post-photographic practices.

Course Prerequisites

Basic knowledge of the history and the languages of cinema and photography.

Teaching Methods

The module is delivered through both lectures and flipped classrooms that include the active participation of the students.

The instructor provides teaching materials in the e-learning online platforms on a weekly basis.

Assessment Methods

For attending students, assessment is based on the evaluation of an oral presentation and the discussion of essays assigned by the instructor during the course, as well as a final oral examination.

For non-attending students, learning is assessed entirely through a final oral exam, based on the completeness, accuracy of language, and ability to summarize the contents of the required reading list.

The final grade is expressed out of 30.

For students taking the Visual Culture exam (which includes the Audiovisual Media and Immersive Technologiesmodule), the final grade is calculated as the weighted average of the grades obtained in the two modules.

Contents

1) Introduction to visual culture: theoretical issues and analysis method in the contemporary visual media ecology

2) Fundamentals of an “enactive” approach to visual media at the encounter between humanities and cognitive science

3) Contemporary theories of cinema in its relationship with philosophy, experimental science, and mediology.

4) Post-photographic theories and amateur photographic practices (selfie, urban photography, tourist photography)

More information

The instructor communicates with students through the university e-learning platform. Students are required to consult the e-learning space of the module on a weekly basis to access materials provided by the instructor. Non-attending students supplement the exam program with additional readings.

Given the teaching methods that characterize the module, non-attending students integrate the exam program with an additional reading chosen from those indicated by the teacher on Leganto.

Erasmus and PDP or PEI students are invited to get in contact with the instructor at the beginning of the course.
