Contents

This course is devoted to Edward Gordon Craig's ritheatricalization of the theater. We will study the new meaning that the stage director intends to give to the theater, as idea, statute and praxis. We will analyze Craig's reinvention of theater, as a meeting place between art and craft, in which the director is the unique author, the stage becomes writing and the visual dimension takes on a dramaturgical function. The analysis will focus on some essays published in the journals “The Mask” and “The Marionette,” as places of theoretical experimentation. The perspective of the English stage director will be moreover considered in close connection with the performing arts culture of his era, marked by the new directorial theories in the European context.
