By taking this course, the student will have acquired essential knowledge of Boolean logic, information representation and digital logic, programming (in the Python language), and query formulation for relational databases using the SQL language. The student will also have gained familiarity with the history of computer science and the history of artificial intelligence that from it has emerged, and will be able to appreciate how the latter is rapidly transforming the former.
Familiarity with the topics covered by the ICDL certification is suggested (but not required).
The course consists of face-to-face lectures and guided computer-lab sessions.
Learning is assessed via a written test consisting of both theoretical and practical questions, followed by an oral examination (which may be a pro-forma for students who have achieved a sufficiently high score in the written exam).
The students are required to consult the e-learning page of the course on a weekly basis to obtain the support materials for the lectures and/or any additional resources the instructor will provide.
The course's program is the same for both not-attending and attending students.
