Course Objectives

CONSTITUTIONAL HISTORY

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The course contributes to the achievement of the educational goals of the Master’s degree programme, with specific reference to the development of effective tools for reading contemporary political organizations, related processes and conceptualizations, considering also their historical genesis.

At the end of the course students will have acquired:

- a general knowledge of the main profiles of contemporary constitutionalism (19th-20th centuries) and of some exemplary constitutional experiences

- mastery of the historiographical concepts necessary for contextualisation, analysis and understanding of theoretical orientations and experiences

- the ability to establish comparisons between different ideas and experiences

- the ability to approach new, contexts by setting up an examination

- the ability to contextualise, analyse, compare, synthesise, producing a paper or a presentation

- the ability to argue theses on the topics, by selecting appropriate elements and mastering the basic lexicon of the discipline.

Teaching Methods

STORIA COSTITUZIONALE

Teacher's lecture, shared analysis of documents and texts, classroom exercise, mandatory individual work with paper production, to be sent by e-mail to the teacher at least three days in advance of the examination


Assessment Methods

CONSTITUTIONAL HISTORY

Oral examination starting with the paper's discussion, following with 1 question on each text and 1 question on the contents of the lessons.

The examination will ascertain the level of class aims accomplishment, according to the following evaluation scale: adequate (18-23/30), satisfying (24-26/30), good (27-28/30), very good (29-30/30).





Contents

Costitutional History

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

European Constitutions in the Twentieth Century.

The course will outline the main European constitutions of the early Twentieth Century, examining their cultural roots, historical premises, different forms, and mutual influences. Keys to understanding will be provided by referring to the interpretative categories of constitutional history, focusing on some key issues that concern contemporary constitutionalism. An in-depth look at the genetic phase, that is, democratic constituent processes, will concern the Italian case, for which some surveys will be proposed in the works of the Constituent Assembly. By the end of the class a critical discourse will be set up on the theme of the implementation of the constitution and the public communication that develops around it.

CONSTITUTIONAL HISTORY

Slides, historical sources, incidental announcements will be loaded on the e-learning platform Moodle.

Attending the class is highly recommended.

Students who cannot attend classes, visiting and Erasmus students, or students with PDP or PEI may contact the teacher by e-mail for an individual talk that will help them to adopt a useful approach to the texts

and to chose a topic for the paper.

The teacher will receive the students on appointment in the office n. 304, via Pignolo 123 or remotely on Teams.

Examination texts are listed in the Leganto website, which needs a careful reading
