Overview

Primo Semestre (23/09/2025 - 20/12/2025)

Syllabus

Course Objectives

The philosophy’s degree programme aims to provide a solid grounding in the history of the Western philosophical tradition, in dialogue with other cultures. Moreover, it wants to lay the foundations for an autonomous ability to produce, evaluate and discuss philosophical arguments, and also to deepen the logical and linguistic tools in the main areas of philosophical reflection. In line with these objectives, the course will focus on that part of ancient philosophy that has always been the object of exclusion and devaluation: that exercised by women philosophers of antiquity. At the end of the course, the students will have become familiar with texts and issues of fundamental interest for gender equality.

Course Prerequisites

Knowledge of the most important doctrines in the history of ancient philosophy and a certain argumentative ability are required.

Teaching Methods

The course involves lectures, seminar presentations, and discussions.

Assessment Methods

Students will be required to present and discuss in class a written text on the courses’ themes, whose topic will be decided with the teacher on the basis of a shared bibliography.

The mark assigned to the presentation will average the mark of the other module of Gender Studies and concur to the final mark, expressed in thirties and which will be determined after taking an oral examination.

Contents

The course is divided into two parts. In the first one, we will analyse the Plato’s and Aristotle’s positions on the inclusion of women in the philosophical practice. In the second part, we will analyze famous but unjustly devalued figures of ancient women philosophers: Pythagoreans women, Diotima, Hypatia.
