The course aims to offer a historiographical analysis of global connections of modern and contemporary history. The main purpose is to provide the students with a specific historiographical approach which has strong points and weaknesses and to help them to reflect on today's issues in a global and long-term historical framework.

The course provides traditional lectures. However, students will be asked to read and explain global history papers to their colleagues. Discussion will be promoted in a climate of openness and exchange.
Oral examination (max. 25-30 mins.) which will assess in particular the students' ability to master the lectures' topics and to make connections.
The course presents the historiographical practice of Global History in its main theoretical aspects and research topics, showing how this approach can usefully provide some insight on topics often studied through local or national perspectives. Lectures will discuss themes such as Eurocentrism and its critics, the historical relationship between Europeans and "others", the origins of globalization, the meaning of key-concepts like State, nation, empire and others.
