Syllabus

Course Objectives

The aim of this course is to tackle the issue of understanding the materials' properties used in both new and existing structures and infrastructures. The course consists of a combination of classroom lectures and laboratory activities, following a logical sequence that guides the engineers through various stages. These stages encompass not only the diagnosis of degradation and deterioration in a structure but also the collection of essential data for developing an intervention plan for apparently sound existing structures.

The process begins with acquiring historical and geographical data that characterize the structure, followed by inspections (or the creation of inspection plans for complex structures) and the formulation of a plan for instrumental measurements on the structure. Finally, the course concludes with the analysis of the obtained results.

Course Prerequisites

Knowledge about construction materials.

Teaching Methods

Classroom lectures and laboratory activities. Case history.

Assessment Methods

Oral exam with discussion of real cases.

- THE SITE INSPECTION AND THE INSPECTION PLAN
- IN SITU DIAGNOSTIC TECHNIQUES
+ Magnetometric techniques, Schmidt hammer, ultrasonic tests, SonReb technique, sonic tomography and georadar, pull-off test, pull-out test, penetration tests, flat jacks, thermography, colorimetric tests, potential mappings, identification of cracks, resistographic analysis, humidity measurements, sampling and coring.
- LABORATORY DIAGNOSTIC TECHNIQUES
+ Determination of residual elastic-mechanical properties, elemental chemical analysis, X-ray diffraction, optical and electron microscopy, thermal and thermo-gravimetric analyses, porosimetry
- RESULTS ANALYSIS TECHNIQUES
+ Estimation of the residual service life of the structure, estimation of the penetration rate of aggressive substances
+ Estimation of in situ strength and potential strength of concrete cores taken from existing structures
