Overview

Date/time interval

Primo Semestre (15/09/2025 - 20/12/2025)

Syllabus

Course Objectives

The methodologies for the study of the existing buildings will be presented, assuming the knowledge of the materials and construction techniques as a necessary starting point for any further analysis. The acknowledgement of architectural quality, together with the identification of material and constructive characteristics, as well as the deterioration processes, allows for the choice of a compatible reuse project for the building.

Course Prerequisites

Almost a rough knowledge of restoration theory development in the last two centuries, as well as a basic knowledge of history of architecture is preferred.

Teaching Methods

Theorical lectures in the classroom, practical exercice on-site with survey of a building of historical and architectural interest.

The tables produced during the course become the subject of the final examination.

Assessment Methods

The final examination will include the group discussion of the survey drawings produced by the students, and an individual verification of the theoretical knowledge aquired.

The final grade will take into account the individual marks in the two modules of the course.

Contents

Evolution of protection approach: from restoration charters to the italian cultural heritage code.

Referring to specific case studies, some of the topics will be:

- slowing or softening deterioration effects;

- seismic improvement vs. structural upgrading;

- new materials and traditional ones;

- tools for the analysis of historic buildings: stratigraphic analysis, construction system detection, cracking pattern survey and representation
