Course Objectives

The course provides principles and methods for the functional design of mechanical systems used for motion transformation.

Course Prerequisites

Applied mechanics, machine design

reports on some practical design and final oral exam. maximum 20 points for the oral part, maximum 10 points for the discussion on the practical design

Contents

introduction to the course, basic concept of functional design
main characteristics of mechanical systems used for motion transformation. Analysis of the typology
transmission quality, synthesis parameters related to the typology of mechanisms
introduction to the motion laws
adimensional form of the motion laws
kinematic coefficients of the motion laws
motion laws families: constant acceleration motion laws, symmetric and asymmetric motion laws, cubic motion laws
motion laws related to vibrating load: motion laws that reduce the overload on the vibrating load
jerk profile, jerk coefficient, influence of the motion law discontinuity on the vibrating load overload
cycloidal motion law, polynomial motion law, seven parameters motion law

influence of the pressure angle and of the profile radius on the cam's design
typology of planar cams
analytical synthesis of planar cams

synthesis of four bar linkages for fast return solutions
synthesis of delay mechanisms
criterion for press design
