Course Objectives

The course Arts aims at stimulating students’ awareness of the cultural background of management of tourism projects involving the contemporary art domain, and pursues the following objectives:

-to learn basic notions in Modern and Contemporary art since the early Twentieth century to the present;

- to get acquainted with the proper terminology and vocabulary related to the art discourse;

- to know the main structures and events (museums and art galleries, biennials, fairs, exhibitions) through which the arts are spread out and interlace with tourism paths to develop familiarity with the reference tools for further and continuing self-training in the arts as a basis for tourist planning;

At the end of the course, students will have achieved an understanding of the ethical responsibility of tourism planning as a cultural contribution to a multicultural social project of civilization and economic development.

Contents

The course offers the students an overview of Modern and Contemporary art, from the early Twentieth century to the present, focusing in particular on the shift from the Western prevailing point of view to the enlarged, multifocal perspective of the globalized world. It will also address cultural issues such as gender, post colonial critique, re-qualification of public spaces, and growing value in the economical system. Topics in detail:

  • art history survey of Modern and Contemporary art: artists, movements, new techniques and ideas
  • how we do define a “work of art” after the revolution of the Avant-gardes, in the midst of the heterogeneity of the contemporary artistic production
  • new relationships between art and publics
  • critical approaches in post modern times: gender, postcolonial, social, post medial
  • new strategies in the diffusion and communication of art through international events: museums, exhibitions, biennials, fairs, main periodicals and web communication
