Syllabus

Course Objectives

The English for Tourism course is designed to help students improve their communication skills in English. By the end of the course, students will be able to:


  • communicate more fluently and confidently with international colleagues and organizations in a wide range of real-world professional contexts;
  • deliver engaging customer service experiences in various tourism-related settings;
  • handle and resolve challenging customer service situations;
  • write a travel proposal;
  • draft cover letters to support job applications;
  • approach job interviews with confidence.

The course places a strong emphasis on spoken interaction. Throughout the course, participants will work collaboratively on tasks that help them build the confidence and skills necessary to communicate effectively in diverse professional scenarios.


Course Prerequisites

Language competence at B2/C1 level according to the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR).


Teaching Methods

The course will be based on lectures that include the textual analysis of authentic materials. Particular emphasis will be placed on discussion, and students will be encouraged to suggest topics for further exploration. Students are advised to attend both the language learning activities offered by the University Language Centre (CCL) appropriate to their proficiency level and the tutoring sessions available throughout the academic year. Assessment Methods

The exam consists of the following components:

(A) Paper-based written test


  1. Find the mistake
  2. Word formation
  3. Fill in the gap
  4. Reading comprehension

A minimum score of 60% is required to pass.

The result of the computer-based test is valid for 18 months.


(B) Oral exam

The oral exam will consist of a discussion (in English) of the course topics. At least three questions will be asked to assess the student's understanding of the course content.

Assessment criteria will include:


  1. linguistic accuracy,
  2. fluency, clarity, and coherence,
  3. content knowledge of the course topics.



Contents

The course will address current issues and topics such as sustainability and ecotourism, hotel branding and boutique hotels, conflict management, and more. The core content of the module includes the syntactic, lexical, and textual features of English as a specialized language used in the tourism industry.
