Course Objectives

The module of the Ancient World History (5 CFU), together with the module of Geography (4 CFU), is a part of the course of Institution of History and Geography I.

At the end of the course students will acquire the fundamentals of History of the ancient world, by learning the basic concepts of the discipline, which will be correlated both in methods and in contents with the module of Geography. This goal will be accomplished above all by intense workshop sessions, totally combined as for both of the modules: students will be carried in the analysis of the historical events of ancient history and guided in focusing them by temporal and spatial coordinates.

The specific objective and topic of the Ancient World History module is to provide the student the instruments for the critical analysis and comprehension of some of the main historical events of ancients history up to approximately 1000 A.C. in a geographical area that revolves around the Mediterranean Sea; once the main concepts have been found (freedom/autonomy, democracy, military, empire, faith) together with some of the cross-cutting themes (state organization development and integration processes), the target will be reached using the ancient literary sources presented during the lessons and then debated in all its depth during workshop sessions, strictly connected to the lessons.

The critical analysis on ancient sources is an basic part of the module for its formative and methodological nature: the students can approach the history only by an intelligent use of the sources and a good teacher in primary school has to learn these fundamentals; specific group workshop on topics developed during the lessons will be regularly planned; this allows the students to compare their opinions in order to learn how they can use the historical didactic instruments for their future job as teachers in primary school.

Once the main methodological instruments for ancient history lessons in primary school have been identified during the workshop sessions, also under the tutor’s guidance, the students will check if and how they can be applied during the school teaching; the target will be reached, together with the stage which is planned at the second year, by specific observations and interviews to the teachers during surveys at schools; the results are then to be examined during lab sessions.

Laboratory activities will also focus on the study and analysis of the main didactic tools for the introduction of the concept of time in kindergarten and for the teaching of ancient history in the primary school, with insights related to the themes of inclusion and integration in the declensions related to interculturality and to Special Educational Needs (disabilities, DSA, ADHD and other personal and social circumstances). On the basis of this preliminary work, the student, with the help and guidance of laboratory tutors, will then be asked to verify whether these themes find concrete application at school; the objective will be achieved, in coordination with the internship activity scheduled in the second year of the course, through the elaboration of observations and interviews to be submitted to the teaching staff on the occasion of specific visits to schools; the material will then be discussed in a special laboratory meeting held by the teacher and expert tutors.

The students will be guided, with the instruments provided during labs and available on Moodle platform, in order to be able to create a lesson with the help of the themes discussed during lab sessions, in connection with themes of inclusion and integration; the results will then be discussed during the exams and the student can use them on the occasion of the stage at the second year and to fill in their personal portfolio.

Teaching Methods

Teaching will take place through lectures with discussions and connected labs with special attention to dialogue and active participation of students. A specific lab will be activated in order to prepare the visit at the primary school during the history lessons. To this end, interactive lectures and insights will be developed with the participation of the students. This method is supported by visual tools (power point), videos and web-links, in order to facilitate learning. All documents and papers will be available in Moodle platform for all not attending students.

Assessment Methods

The exam will be in oral form and will concern the knowledge and disciplinary skills acquired in the module.
Both for attending and not attending students, the exam will be organized as follows:
- three questions about historical methods and/or main topics of ancient history;
- introduction and discussion about the small lesson to be prepared for kindergarten or primary school that will be choosen with the teacher and lab tutor and which will be submitted at least in 20 days before the exams;
- one question about the teaching methods of history in the primary school;
- discussion on the laboratory activities subject of the course which, in connection with the learning unit, will be the subject of reflection for the subsequent inclusion in the student's personal portfolio.

The evaluation will consider: the knowledge of the topics, the appropriate use of vocabulary, the ability to make critical connections and reflections, the ability to apply the knowledge.

For attending students the evaluation will also consider their constant and active participation in education and workshop activities carried out during the course. In particular, all the papers realized by different groups during the lab sessions connected to the main course will be considered as an important part of the global evaluation; for this reason the attendance in the course is not mandatory, but highly recommended. As replacement of this part the not attending students will be evaluated on the base of the book W. Panciera, Insegnare storia nella scuola primaria e dell’infanzia.

The global evaluation concerning the exam of the course of Historical and geographical Institutions I will be counted as the average of the single evaluations achieved in the module of History and Geography.
