Syllabus

Course Objectives

The workshop will be conducted through an integrated approach to Language and disciplinary content, with the following goals:

- Development of a B1 proficiency level in English by practicing receptive and productive skills and well-chosen FonF.


- Development of the basics of English for EFL teaching in pre-school and primary schools: NNEST motivation and identity; introduction to classroom language; first routines; basics of L1-L2 code-switching;


- Development of some fundamentals of EFL methodology: motivation and affect in early instructed EFL; EFL in a plurilingual school setting; the significance of input; input, intake, interlanguage; basic notions of second language acquisition; EFL first exposure methodologies.


Course Prerequisites

Students are expected to have at least an A2+ English proficiency level, according to the CEFR.


Teaching Methods

Activities with and among the participants will be alternated with plenary inputs and discussions. The approach is basically incidental English learning with some well-chosen FonF moments.

L1 – L2 codeswitching will occur with the aim of both improving English proficiency and secure content appreciation.

Complementary inputs and activities could be provided also via Moodle and other ICTs.

Activities and reflections will aim at inclusion.


Assessment Methods

Formative assessment of the active participation throughout the workshop and its activities.

- 75% attendance

- Positive evaluation of the student’s activities, tasks and participation

- B1 computer-based test at the end of the course


Contents

The following contents will be dealt with:

- Proficiency in English: B1, fostered fundamentally via receptive and productive use of English and the aid of opportunely selected reactive FonF on level-related structures and functions;


- Language proficiency for EFL teaching: foundations of classroom language; routines in a first developmental step of EFL; principles and praxis of code-switching; foundations of English phonetics and phonology.


- Foundations of methodology: motivation to EFL learning in a plurilingual environment; pedagogical implications of different age groups cognitive features; building up abilities upon input comprehension; chunks and routines for Language learning; CEFR and Indicazioni Nazionali; Basic notions of second language acquisition (nature of language, critical period, input, processing, intake, output, interlanguage, developmental sequences). Definitions of approach, method, technique, procedure. The main pedagogical approaches and methods. TPR.
