Course Objectives

This course aims to provide some basic knowledge in order to gain a general overview within the panorama of German-language literature. We will proceed chronologically from the late Enlightenment to the beginning of the 20th century, analysing the different epochs, genres, and forms of German-language literature.

None

Teaching Methods

The course will be taught as a lecture, but students will have to make presentations on certain topics or authors.

Assessment Methods

The final examination will consist of a written test in Italian aimed at verifying the achievement of the training objectives. There will be three open questions worth 10 points each.

Contents

The course will be structured in two parts. The first part will consist of a systematic introduction to the history of German literature from the late Enlightenment to the first half of the 20th century. In particular, we will focus on the cultural-historical context and then delve into certain authors from each era: late Enlightenment, Weimar classicism, romanticism, 19th-century realism, naturalism, fin de siècle, expressionism. In the second part of the course, building on the knowledge gained, we will read two texts: Dantons Tod by Georg Büchner and Der Ausflug der toten Mädchen by Anna Seghers.
